10 Fall Home Maintenance Tips

10 Fall Home Maintenance Tips for Southern California

Inspect your roof! Look for damaged, missing or loose shingles or tiles that may cause leaks. Check all penetrations (vents, skylights, etc.) for proper sealing and flashing. Remove all debris and trim back any foliage hanging over the roof.

Check the heating system to make sure it is in working order and replace the air filter monthly.

Have the chimney sweeped to prevent fires and carbon monoxide from entering your home. Also, don’t forget to close the Damper when a fire isn’t burning in the chimney.

Insulate your attic space, seal holes and weather strip the attic hatch or door.

Caulk around all doors and windows to prevent heat from escaping.

Check the gutter’s condition and clear all debris.

Test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors and replace the batteries if needed.

Trim shrubs and trees against your home.

Reverse your ceiling fans to run in a clockwise direction. This pushes rising hot air back down into the room.

Mulch your leaves when you mow. The leaves will fall between the grass blades, decomposing and nourishing your lawn through the winter.
